1975 Legislation Expands Indian Reservations by 370,000 Acres, 1975-10-31

Scope and Contents

A new legislation, Public Law 94-114, signed by President Ford on October 17, 1975, added 370,000 acres of land to Indian tribal holdings. The land was originally purchased by the United States in the 1930s and was transferred to 17 Indian tribes for better management and use. The land will be held in trust by the United States and managed in the same way as other reservation or Indian trust land. The legislation was part of a national program to retire low-productivity land from private cultivation. Various tribes, including the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes, Navajo Tribe, and others, received additional land through the legislation. Additionally, the Laguna Pueblo Tribe received approximately 520 acres of land within their reservation boundaries.
