Scope and Contents

The American Indian Movement is requesting an operational budget for their Washington office. The budget will be used for office expenses and salaries. The American Indian Movement (AIM) is seeking funds to establish a Washington Office which will serve as a communications and education center for AIM's activities and for coordination with other Indian organizations. The American Indian Movement (AIM) was founded in 1968 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. AIM's three primary targets for change are education, churches, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). AIM has expanded to 20 local chapters across the country. Progress on the target areas includes:

- AIM fought for and got an Indian Advisory Board to the Minneapolis Public School System. With the Indian drop-out rate approaching 90%, AIM announced its intent to seek federal funding for an all Indian school in the City of Minneapolis.

- Because of the churches' history of missionary activity among Indian people, AIM feels that major changes rest within the responsibilities of the churches. AIM's basic concerns were presented to the Lutheran Council U.S.A. at a joint conference of Lutheran Churches and Indian people (LUCHIP). Out of this conference was born the National Indian Lutheran Board.
