Scope and Contents

The U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare has approved 338 grants totaling $2,731,007 under the Drug Abuse Prevention and Early Intervention Program. The purpose of the program is to provide trained leadership to local education agencies to address drug abuse problems. Teams of educational personnel will receive short-term training in drug abuse related issues. The training will focus on understanding drug use among students, communication skills, leadership skills, and alternatives to drugs. The grants cover incidental costs of training and support for implementing drug abuse programs in schools. The program will primarily focus on grades 9-12 in the first year. Information on the program can be obtained from the Division of Drug Education, Nutrition, and Health Programs.
