Scope and Contents

The Department of the Interior announced the appointment of E. B. Maytubby to fill the unexpired term of his late nephew as Governor of the Chickasaw Indian Nation, and the designation of Overton James to serve a two-year term as Governor starting in October 1963. The President was empowered to appoint governors for the "Five Civilized Tribes" of Oklahoma, but this authority was delegated to the Secretary of the Interior in 1951. Governor Maytubby had served in the office since 1939 before passing away in February.
