Mrs. Juanita Johnston Smith sent a telegram to Senator Mike Monroney urging that her brother, Douglas H. Johnston, Jr., be named Governor of the Chickasaw Nation to succeed the late Governor Floyd Maytubby. Senator Monroney responded saying he was uncertain of his role in the selection process, as the Secretary of the Interior has the authority to name the Governor. However, he assured Mrs. Smith that he would keep her brother in mind for the position.
