Continuation of Indian Preference in Employment Policy at the Bureau: A Letter to the Principal Chief of the Creek Nation, 1963-09-30

Scope and Contents

The letter addresses a resolution from the Creek Indian Council requesting that the Bureau of Indian Affairs continue to give preference to Native American Indians in employment. The letter explains that while preference is given to Indians in initial employment if they meet certain qualifications, they are not hired solely based on their ethnicity. The letter also states that the current policy of giving preference to qualified individuals entitled to Indian preference will continue, with more Indians being appointed to the Bureau as they qualify. The Council is encouraged to contact the Muskogee Area Office for employment opportunities, and copies of the reply are being sent to relevant officials for their information. The Secretary and staff of the Bureau assure continued support for the Indian preference policy.
