Correspondence Regarding the Sale of Choctaw Tribal Lands in 1937, 1937-07-15

Scope and Contents

The letter is from J. B. Potts to Senator Elmer Thomas expressing concern about the sale of valuable timbered Indian lands in Oklahoma. Potts urges the Senator to ensure that the property rights of the Indians are properly cared for and that the land is not sold without reserving mineral rights. He also requests a postponement of the sale until an investigation and adjustment of the timber that has been removed from the land is made. Senator Thomas responds, assuring Potts that he has filed protests with the Indian Office and will do what he can to help. He is cooperating with Chief Durant of the Choctaw Tribe for the benefit of Indian citizens.
