Correspondence Regarding Seminole Tribe Per Capita Payment Proposal in 1936, 1936-12-03

Scope and Contents

The text includes a letter from Senator Elmer Thomas to Chili Fish regarding a proposal for per capita payments to members of the Seminole Tribe of Oklahoma. The Office of Indian Affairs does not favor this action and believes that funds would be better utilized through a well-developed economic program. The Commissioner of Indian Affairs also shares this view and emphasizes that per capita payments have only provided temporary relief in the past. Chili Fish requests Senator Thomas to intercede on behalf of the tribe regarding the payment of mileage and per diem for council members.
