1946 Correspondence Regarding Choctaw-Chickasaw Tribal Affairs and Coal Land Sales, 1946-10-23
Scope and Contents
Mrs. Emmert wrote to Senator Elmer Thomas expressing concern about the sale of coal lands belonging to the Choctaw-Chickasaw nations. Senator Thomas responded, stating that no agreement had been reached with the Secretary of the Interior and therefore no sale would be submitted for approval. Mrs. Emmert argued that the land should be sold now for a higher price to benefit the Indian people, and questioned the delay in selling the land. She also mentioned concerns about the appointment of Chief Durant and expressed her support for Senator Thomas based on his past support of Indian people.
