Scope and Contents

The SWCEL Newsletter discusses the challenges faced by Spanish-speaking students in achieving academic success in school districts in the SWCEL region. Recommendations include reevaluating reading methods, improving relationships between home and school, training teachers in bi-cultural teaching, and recognizing the talents of Spanish-speaking students. A program theme focused on language arts with an emphasis on traditional culture was developed through extensive planning meetings. Student testing is being conducted in beacon schools to provide baseline data for program evaluation. Members of SWCEL attended a briefing in New Orleans to discuss regional educational laboratory programs.
