LaDonna Harris Announces Formation of New National Organization to Promote Native American Opportunities, 1967-01-01 - 1969-12-31
Scope and Contents
LaDonna Harris, wife of Senator Fred R. Harris, announced the formation of a new national organization called Americans for Indian Opportunity (AIO) to promote the cause of American Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts. AIO aims to improve conditions and opportunities for Native Americans through job development, education, and other programs. The organization will be headquartered in Washington D.C. and will rely on private contributions and foundation grants to support its activities. The Board of Directors, consisting mainly of Indians, will hold its first meeting in April 1970 to elect officers and approve detailed plans for the year's activities. AIO's goal is to work with local Indian organizations and tribes to ensure that all Native Americans have access to the full promise of America.
