Senate Bill No. 872, Chapter 1420, was approved on September 18, 1970, and added Chapter 4.5 to the Education Code in California. This chapter focuses on American Indian education and establishes a Bureau of Indian Education within the Department of Education. It also creates an American Indian Education Council consisting of 16 Indian members who will recommend programs and services to improve education for American Indian children in the state. The council members will serve without compensation but will receive travel expenses.
