Scope and Contents

Wilson Riles, Superintendent of Public Instruction in California, wrote a letter to Senator Fred Harris requesting assistance in securing more funding for Indian education in California. Riles explained that the current funding from the Johnson O'Malley Act is inadequate to meet the educational needs of Native American students in the state. He noted that California has a significant Native American population and that many projects aimed at meeting vital needs cannot be funded due to lack of funds. Riles emphasized the importance of properly administering funds to have a positive impact on the lives of Native American communities. He also mentioned that the Indian Education Unit is currently housed within the Bilingual-Bicultural Task Force.
