Violations of Federal Regulations in Sterilization Procedures: An Investigation into the Indian Health Service, 1975-04-30
Scope and Contents
The General Accounting Office (GAO) found that the Indian Health Service violated federal regulations by performing sterilizations on Native American women without their informed consent. The GAO report highlighted instances of sterilizations performed for non-medical reasons and without proper counseling. The Indian Health Service did not provide a breakdown of the reasons for sterilizations and did not adequately inform women of their right to change their minds about the procedure. The GAO's findings were criticized by medical experts and raised concerns about the treatment of Native American women by the health service.
