Creek Nation's Innovative Community Hospital Project: A Cooperative Healthcare Initiative in Okfuskee County, 1977-02-28
Scope and Contents
The Creek Nation is proposing a cooperative community hospital project in partnership with Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. They are seeking funding and support from Senator Dewey Bartlett for the project. Additionally, the Creek Nation has received a $1 million appropriation to operate the Okemah hospital and plans to hire staff personnel. There is also a discussion about giving Indian tribes increased legal powers and jurisdiction over non-Indian people and property within reservation boundaries. Rep. Lloyd Meeds disagrees with the idea of inherent tribal sovereignty and believes that many of the recommendations in the report may not be enacted into law due to political realities.
