Scope and Contents
The Bureau of Indian Affairs received a letter from Senator Bartlett regarding the requirement for Indians to possess certificates of Indian blood to receive services at Indian Health Service facilities. The Bureau does not administer health services for Indians, but issues certificates of Indian blood when proper proof is presented. Responsibility for medical care of Indians was transferred to the U.S. Public Health Service in 1955. The letter was referred to the Director of the Indian Health Service for appropriate action.
