Major Reorganization of Bureau of Indian Affairs Expected in Next 90 Days, 1959-01-01 - 1959-12-31
Scope and Contents
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is undergoing a major reorganization that will shift power to tribal governments and focus on service rather than management. The changes, initiated by Commissioner Loui's B. Bruce, aim to give more authority to tribes and eliminate paternalistic phrases from job descriptions. The reorganization has been met with opposition from some tribal leaders and BIA officials. Rep. Ed Edmondson plans to consult with Oklahoma Indian leaders to gather their input on the changes.
