Scope and Contents
The letter is a response to a request for information regarding the sale of unallotted coal and asphalt lands owned by the Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations. The lands were purchased by the Government for $8,500,000, with payments to be made to enrolled members and their heirs. The exact amount of the payments is estimated to be around $350 per share. Applications for payments will be distributed by the office and through District Agents and Probate Attorneys. Payments will be made as soon as possible, with no involvement of attorneys or creditors. Freedmen and new members will not participate in the payment, and individuals are advised not to submit documents until requested.
