Scope and Contents

Mr. William Lewis wrote a letter to Carl Albert, a congressman, inquiring about the payment to members of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Tribes for the sale of their coal lands to the government. He had not received his payment yet and was concerned about rumors that the Department was withholding the money due to uncertainty about taxation. Carl Albert responded, explaining that checks were being mailed out by the Five Civilized Tribes Agency and advised Mr. Lewis to contact them to request an application form. He also reassured Mr. Lewis that the Department was not withholding the money due to tax issues.
