Scope and Contents

The letter is in response to concerns raised by Mr. D. H. Dukes and other Indian citizens regarding coal and asphalt lands. The writer, Carl Albert, promises to push for a successful conclusion in negotiations between Tribal Officials and the Department of Interior. He mentions a bill introduced by Bill Stigler to extend lease terms, but states he will not support it unless the rights of the Indians are fully protected. Albert assures that he wants to see the coal mines continue operating but also insists on protecting the rights of the Indians. He appreciates the letter and welcomes further communication.
