1947 Correspondence on Choctaw Tribe's Request for Per Capita Payment and Sale of Tribal Lands to the U.S. Government, 1947-01-01 - 1947-12-31
Scope and Contents
The Secretary of the Interior received a letter regarding a petition by the Choctaw Indians for a per capita payment and the sale of tribal mineral lands to the United States. The Secretary cannot recommend a per capita payment at this time due to administrative problems and costs. Negotiations are ongoing for the sale of the Choctaw-Chickasaw coal and asphalt lands to the United States, with disagreements over the purchase price. The Indians are requesting the Government to consider their equities arising from delays in fulfilling obligations.
