Confusion and Controversy in Choctaw Nation Election: A Letter from Principal Chief Harry J. W. Belvin to Congressman Carl Albert, 1952-08-07
Scope and Contents
Congressman Carl Albert received a report about confusion during an election among illiterate Choctaws, with many write-in names on the ballot. The results of the referendum were discussed, and there were concerns that the Department may ignore the results and appoint someone of their choice. The Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation, Harry J. W. Belvin, asked for help from Carl Albert to ensure justice for the Choctaws. Belvin also mentioned organizing for effective action and expressed gratitude for support.
