Scope and Contents

The statement of the Committee on Minority Group Children was presented to the Senate Subcommittee on Government Research on April 23, 1968. The statement on racism and public health was presented by Dr. Price M. Cobbs, psychiatrist at the University of California Medical Center. The statement highlights the destructive effects of racism on the mental health of children, black and white, and argues that racism is a most compelling health hazard. The committee recommends that the government take action to ameliorate the social and economic inequities faced by minority groups in the United States. Senator Fred Harris, chairman of the subcommittee, responded by commending the statement and announcing that he would ask the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders to reconvene.
