Extension of Registration Deadline for Chickasaw Tribal Election, 1971-03-26

Scope and Contents

The Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma have approved the 18-year-old vote for their upcoming elections for principal chiefs. The Seminoles, who set the precedent for this, elected their chief in 1969. The election procedures for the tribes closely parallel the state election code. Candidates must be 35 years old, a US citizen, and not convicted of a felony. The elections must be approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Chickasaws will vote for their governor in July. The Creeks and Choctaws have not yet established their age requirements for candidates.
