Choctaw Tribal Property Litigation: Update and Plans, 1971-04-17

Scope and Contents

The Choctaw tribe is facing difficulties in getting their rules and regulations for tribal elections approved by Washington officials, which is believed to be due to prejudice. The Secretary's office holds power over the authority delegated to the tribe, causing frustration and hindering the democratic selection of tribal leaders. The tribe's principal chief, Harry J.W. Belvin, is questioning the government's ability to gain the trust of subjugated people when using despotic measures. Belvin has threatened to seek justice through the courts if necessary.
