1966 Letter from the Bureau of Indian Affairs Regarding Oklahoma Income Taxes of Native Americans, 1966-10-21
Scope and Contents
The Bureau of Indian Affairs received a complaint from an individual named Mr. Yackeyonny regarding State of Oklahoma income taxes paid by four individual Indians. The bureau found that two of the individuals had not paid any state income taxes, while the other two had paid taxes in the past. The bureau is currently working to obtain refunds for income taxes paid on behalf of individual Indian taxpayers where evidence can be substantiated. Some Indians have hired private attorneys to help them obtain refunds, and the bureau cooperates with the attorneys by providing evidence from their records. The bureau is actively working on a special project to gather documentary evidence for this purpose. The bureau returned a copy of the letter to Mr. Yackeyonny to the United States Senator.
