Scope and Contents

Interior Secretary Udall has ordered a complete review of the federal government's Indian services with the aim of drafting new legislation to improve living standards for Native Americans. Some ideas include separating economic development from political development, allowing Indians to mortgage their land, and integrating Indian education with the public school system. Senator Harris's plea for American Indians was endorsed by Senator Mondale and Democratic leader Mike Mansfield, who highlighted the need for improved housing and assistance for Native American communities. They hope for a new deal that will benefit Native Americans.
