Five Tribes Agency's Statement on Cherokee Per Capita Payments, 1949-01-01 - 1949-12-31
Scope and Contents
The Department of the Interior at the Five Tribes Agency in Muskogee, Oklahoma has received numerous inquiries about per capita payments to the Cherokees. The last payment was made in 1916 for $3.30, and those who did not claim it within three years are now ineligible. The Cherokee Tribe currently has a small fund and no payments are expected in the near future. However, the Tribe has claims against the government that may result in future payments to its members. The office is not currently accepting proof of eligibility for payments, but will provide ample notice when the time comes.
