Protecting Restricted Indians: Legislation for the Five Civilized Tribes, 1953-01-01 - 1953-12-31
Scope and Contents
Congressman Carl Albert will introduce legislation during the first session of the 54th Congress to extend restrictions on Indians of the Five Civilized Tribes with one-half or more Indian blood. The current law, enacted in 1928, is set to expire in 1956. The bill aims to protect restricted Indians from the sale, lease, or encumbrance of their lands. Representative Albert has received support from various tribes and will push for the legislation to be passed in the next session to avoid difficulties. The bill will not change existing laws on the removal of restrictions. Hearings will be held to allow representatives of the tribes to testify on the matter.
