Legislation for the Future: Advancing Indian Affairs in Congress, 1956-08-13

Scope and Contents

In Washington, plans are being made for three bills related to Indian affairs in the next Congress. The first bill aims to extend restrictions on members of the Five Civilized Tribes, the second will reopen the right to file claims before the Indian Claims Commission, and the third seeks to promote rehabilitation of members of the Five Civilized Tribes and other Indians in eastern Oklahoma. Representative Albert emphasized the importance of passing the bill to extend restrictions before April 26, 1956, in order to protect Oklahoma Indians from potential difficulties. Additionally, the Congressman plans to submit legislation to reopen the right to file claims and hopes to gain favorable consideration for the 1951 Stigler Bill, which focuses on rehabilitation efforts for the Five Civilized Tribes.
