New Policy Ensures Per Capita Payments for Indian Heirs: Announcement from Congress Albert's Office, 1951-01-01 - 1951-12-31

Scope and Contents

Congressman Carl Albert announced that per capita payments will now be made to known heirs, even if the addresses of other heirs are not known. This decision was made after discussions with Congressman V.O. Stigler and the Office of Indian Affairs. The goal is to ensure that those who have established their claims receive their payments promptly, rather than waiting for all heirs to be identified. This change will benefit thousands of Indian heirs who have been waiting for their payments. Additional per capita payments are expected due to a favorable decision in the Lease District case and the Commitation bill, pending a vote by the Choctaw Tribe. In the Lease District case, the judgment was $902,008.11 and for the Choctaws, it was $2,587,833.47.
