Choctaw Indians Given Opportunity to Vote on Treaty Settlement, 1950-09-05
Scope and Contents
On September 1, 1950, the Choctaw Indians were given the opportunity to vote on the settlement of certain treaty payments through the signing of the capitalization bill by the President. The bill, introduced by Congressman Carl Albert, commutes treaty payments into a lump sum for distribution to enrolled Choctaws and their heirs. This is seen as a step towards settling all claims and obligations between the Choctaws and the United States Government.
