Funding Challenges for Oklahoma National Defense Area Schools in 1946-47: A Retrospective Analysis, 1945-01-01 - 1946-12-31
Scope and Contents
Officials from Oklahoma Lanham Act Schools and the State Department of Education met to discuss the financial outlook for schools in National Defense Areas for the 1946-47 school year. Despite the displacement of children due to national defense activities, the Federal Works Agency announced they would not seek further appropriations for school assistance. This decision poses challenges for schools in defense areas, as they may not be able to provide adequate education programs without federal assistance. School leaders in defense areas acknowledge the need for federal assistance but are reluctant to rely on it permanently.
