Petition for Discharge: A Call for Action, 1945-11-03
Scope and Contents
The letter from Rita M. DeCourcy to Representative George B. Schwabe expresses concern about the delay in demobilization of soldiers and sailors and urges him to sign a discharge petition in support of a bill introduced by Representative Paul Shafer. Schwabe responds by explaining that he usually does not sign discharge petitions but made an exception in this case because he is eager to get the boys back home, as he has four sons in the service. He mentions his efforts to bring the soldiers back home through discussions with the President and bills introduced in Congress, but expresses doubt about the willingness of the government to pass any legislation until public opinion becomes overwhelmingly strong.
