Advocating for Education: A Letter from George B. Schwabe, 1945-08-27

Scope and Contents

Mr. Smith wrote to Congressman Schwabe requesting that high school boys who have not had the chance to start college should be discharged from the service immediately. Congressman Schwabe responded by informing Mr. Smith that he had already taken up the issue with the President and Secretary of War, and shared copies of relevant letters. He also mentioned introducing legislation on the matter and expressed sympathy for boys in the service, as he has four sons in the military. Mr. Smith's original letter emphasized the importance of allowing high school boys to complete their education, now that the draft age has been lowered and the emergency has passed.
