Combat Duty Discrimination: A Letter from the Front Lines, 1946-07-03

Scope and Contents

The letter from Staff Sargeant E. F. Jernigan to Congressman George B. Schwabe expresses frustration with discriminatory practices and changing orders in the military affecting personnel who have seen combat duty. Jernigan criticizes the lack of well-defined policy, arbitrary decisions, and the preference for drafting over voluntary enlistment. He mentions bills he introduced to bring certain personnel home, including those wanting to finish schooling, but they remain unconsidered. Jernigan also expresses frustration with delays in returning personnel and the ease with which fathers can obtain dependency discharge. He voices concerns about the treatment of overseas personnel and the lack of consideration for their service. Jernigan also mentions a demonstration in Manila and expresses dissatisfaction with the War Department's decisions.
