Efforts to Protect Young Soldiers: A Letter of Appreciation and Support, 1945-04-23

Scope and Contents

The document is a letter from George B. Schwabe, M. C. to Mr. L. A. Swain, thanking him for his support in opposing the Army's policy of sending 18-year-old boys into combat duty without adequate training. Schwabe mentions that he personally took up the matter with the President and that the Senate has passed a bill amending the Selective Service Act to limit placing 18-year-old boys in combat service until after they have had at least 6 months' training. Schwabe expresses appreciation for Swain's contribution and cooperation and credits him for the successful outcome. The letter also references a previous letter from Swain to Representative Daniel J. Flood, expressing opposition to the Army policy and offering support and signed petitions to assist in making a stand against it.
