Legislative Efforts to Strengthen Indian Education: A Historical Review, 1973-01-01 - 1973-12-31
Scope and Contents
The Department of the Interior announced a realignment of central office functions and responsibilities of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, in line with the President's directive to transfer operational activities from Washington to field offices. The realignment includes the creation of a Commissioner of Indian Affairs and Deputy Commissioner positions, along with six major offices within the Central Office organization. The aim is to increase effectiveness in delivering services to Native Americans and reduce staff in central offices in Washington, Albuquerque, and Denver. A steering committee and working group have been designated to review and recommend a complete reorganization of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
