Amendment to the Indian Educational Reform Act of 1974, 1973-01-01 - 1974-12-31
Scope and Contents
The Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a clarification regarding the lowering of the voting age for tribal elections. The amendment only applies to elections authorized by the Secretary under the Indian Reorganization Act and does not affect tribal governing documents. The regulations now conform with the 26th amendment to the United States Constitution. Changes were made to allow for absentee ballots without requiring certification by two adults and to eliminate the need for return receipts for notifying off-reservation tribal members. The amendments were published in the Federal Register on April 23 and are immediately effective.
