Scope and Contents

The Mayor of Arkansas City, Kansas, Erwin E. Knocke, wrote to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Congressman Page Belcher regarding a promised $75,000 planning grant for the Chilocco Indian School. The Bureau of Indian Affairs stated that no money had been requested for off-reservation boarding schools pending the results of a study, and the planning funds for Chilocco were omitted from the budget until the results of the study were evaluated. The Mayor expressed disappointment at the delay in funding for Chilocco, highlighting the school's importance to the community.
