Response to Allegations of Misconduct at Chilocco Indian School: An Official Letter from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, 1950-01-01 - 1959-12-31
Scope and Contents
The letter is in response to concerns raised by Hon. Page Belcher regarding allegations of physical mistreatment at Chilocco Indian School. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is investigating the allegations, and the Superintendent and Principal have been temporarily reassigned. Contract negotiations for the operation of the school have been put on hold, and there have been no negotiations with prospective contractors. The Bureau is exploring the feasibility of a contractual arrangement to potentially strengthen the school. The Bureau appreciates the support of the Council of American Indians and hopes to resolve the matter quickly to improve the educational program at Chilocco Indian School.
