Response to Loan Request: A Letter from Congressman George B. Schwabe, 1946-01-25 - 1946-01-25
Scope and Contents
Miss Nell Ratcliff wrote a letter to Congressman George B. Schwabe on January 25, 1946, urging him to support the administration's proposed $3,750,000,000 loan to Great Britain. However, Congressman Schwabe received a letter from a constituent stating that over 90% of the people in his district do not want him to vote for the appropriation making this loan possible. The constituent believes that the money should be spent on returning servicemen who need homes, rather than giving it to foreigners. The constituent also mentions that Great Britain has not reciprocated or repaid loans previously given by the US. Congressman Schwabe agrees with his constituents and believes it is his duty to represent their views.
