Debate Over the U.S. Loan to Britain, 1946-02-05 - 1946-02-05
Scope and Contents
Mrs. Barnett, President of the Oklahoma League of Women Voters, wrote to Mr. George Schwabe urging him to vote for the U.S. loan to Britain. However, Mr. Schwabe expressed that he is unlikely to support the loan as the majority of his constituents and members of Congress are against it. He believes that the American people should not be forced to lend money to foreign countries at this time. Mr. Schwabe also suggested that if citizens wish to subscribe to the loan, the government could act as an agent or allow foreign representatives to sell bonds in the country. He appreciates Mrs. Barnett's request for his views but does not currently see any reason to vote for the loan.
