Jack Cochrane, who presents himself as a watchdog of the Treasury against Indian claims, has been criticized for taking credit for the work done by the Court of Claims and the Supreme Court in limiting the amount of money awarded to Indian claimants. Despite his claims of protecting the Treasury, he secured a large appropriation for a memorial in his district, far exceeding what the national capital invested in a memorial to Abraham Lincoln. His importance as a watchdog of the Treasury is seen as political and exaggerated.
