Republican Members of the Ways and Means Committee Express Concerns Over Potential Tariff Reductions, 1945-01-01 - 1946-12-31

Scope and Contents

The Republican members of the Ways and Means Committee are in favor of extending the Trade Agreement law for another year, as long as section 2 is eliminated. They believe that bilateral trade agreements should be genuinely reciprocal in order to stimulate foreign trade and maintain price and wage levels. They are against the Doughton bill, which would give the State Department too much power in lowering tariff rates. They argue that allowing too many imports could harm American industries and workers. They believe that America should prioritize its own interests first and not give away the American market.
