Scope and Contents

This memorandum discusses the jurisdictional status of the Pawnee Tribal Reserve, also known as the Pawnee school and agency reserve, within the context of Indian reservation laws. The Reserve, comprising 646 acres, was set aside by Congress in 1968 for the benefit of the Pawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. The history of the Reserve includes legal disputes over tribal ownership and compensation for surplus lands. The memorandum also discusses efforts to establish tribal ownership of the Reserve in order to facilitate development and tribal uses.
